Schminnow Fly #4 – Schminnow Fishing Fly for Snook, Trout & Bass

A remarkably versatile baitfish and shrimp-style fly originally developed for Florida beach snook fishing. The Schminnow is equally effective on saltwater flats, around dock lights, and in freshwater rivers and streams.

Description

The Schminnow is a proven Florida saltwater pattern created by Norm Ziegler for targeting snook along the Gulf Coast beaches. Since its introduction, this simple but highly effective fly has earned a reputation for catching far more than snook.

Capt. Ken’s Schminnow Fly is a favorite among our guides for fishing Florida flats and backcountry waters, but its usefulness doesn't stop in saltwater. It is also an excellent choice for trout, smallmouth bass, panfish, and other freshwater gamefish.

One of its most productive applications is dock light fishing. The Schminnow's small baitfish profile and movement make it an excellent choice when predators are feeding around illuminated docks after dark.

Available in four proven colors, this size #4 Schminnow belongs in both freshwater and saltwater fly boxes.

Why Fish the Schminnow?

  • Proven snook fly: Originally developed for Florida Gulf beach snook fishing.

  • Versatile baitfish imitation: Effective for a wide range of freshwater and saltwater species.

  • Excellent around dock lights: A productive choice for targeting feeding predators after dark.

  • Guide-used pattern: Our guides fish it on Florida flats and freshwater rivers.

  • Multiple color options: Choose from White, Pink, Olive, and Blue.

Target Species

The Schminnow is effective for a wide variety of gamefish, including:

  • Snook

  • Trout

  • Smallmouth bass

  • Panfish

  • Other freshwater and saltwater predators

When to Fish It

  • On Florida Gulf Coast beaches and saltwater flats

  • In Tampa Bay flats and backcountry waters

  • Around dock lights when fish are feeding on small baitfish

  • In rivers and streams for trout and smallmouth bass

  • Whenever predatory fish are feeding on smaller forage

How to Fish It

Fish the Schminnow with short, steady strips and occasional pauses to imitate a small swimming or fleeing baitfish. Around dock lights, cast beyond the feeding area and retrieve the fly through the illuminated water where predators are hunting.

In rivers and streams, vary your retrieve and allow the fly to drift naturally through likely holding water.

Capt. Ken’s Guide Tip

Don't reserve the Schminnow just for saltwater. Our guides use this pattern in both Florida backcountry waters and freshwater rivers. Keep a few in your box for dock light fishing, where snook and other predators can become very selective about small baitfish.
