Capt. Ken’s version of the proven Kwan Fly, designed to imitate the small baitfish and crustaceans that inhabit saltwater flats. A versatile pattern for bonefish, redfish, snook and other shallow-water predators.
The Kwan is one of the most versatile patterns you can carry on the saltwater flats. Originally designed as a bonefish fly, it has also proven extremely effective for redfish, snook and a variety of other inshore species.
Capt. Ken’s version of the Kwan combines the characteristics of a small baitfish and crustacean imitation in one fly. Its unique action makes it especially effective when fish are feeding on small forage along the bottom.
Retrieve the fly with quick strips and it flutters through the water like a fleeing shrimp, crab or small baitfish. Pause the retrieve and the fly dives toward the bottom, creating the impression of a crustacean settling or escaping into the bottom structure.
This combination of movement and a natural-looking pause gives the Kwan a presentation that can trigger strikes from fish feeding in shallow water.
Versatile forage imitation: Suggests small baitfish and crustaceans found on saltwater flats.
Unique action: Flutters during a quick retrieve and dives toward the bottom when paused.
Multi-species appeal: Originally developed for bonefish, but proven for redfish, snook and more.
Four productive colors: Options for different water conditions, bottom types and light levels.
Use short, quick strips to make the fly dart and flutter like fleeing forage. Follow each series of strips with a pause, allowing the fly to settle toward the bottom.
This retrieve creates an effective combination of movement and stillness. Watch the fly line carefully during the pause, as fish will often pick up the fly as it settles.
For bonefish, present it ahead of cruising fish and let it reach the bottom before beginning your retrieve. For redfish and snook, work it around shallow flats, potholes, grass edges and other areas where small baitfish and crustaceans are found.
Don't retrieve the Kwan continuously. One of its best features is the way it behaves when you stop stripping. The fly settles toward the bottom like a fleeing crustacean seeking cover. I like to mix quick strips with deliberate pauses, giving fish an opportunity to react to the movement and then eat the fly as it settles.
