Sulfur Emerger Fly – Ken’s Sunken Sulfur Emerger
A detailed sunken mayfly emerger designed to imitate one of the most vulnerable stages of a mayfly’s emergence. Available in six popular hatch patterns to match the insects trout feed on throughout the season.
Description
The Baxter House Sunken Emerger is a highly detailed mayfly pattern that imitates an insect transitioning from its nymphal stage toward becoming an adult. During this stage, the emerging mayfly is especially vulnerable as it struggles toward the surface, making it an easy feeding opportunity for trout.
Capt. Ken’s Sunken Emergers are available in the color patterns of the most popular mayflies imitated by fly fishers. Choose from Hendrickson, March Brown, Green Drake, Isonychia, Sulfur, and Blue Wing Olive (BWO) to match the hatch and the feeding activity you encounter.
These versatile emerger flies can be fished below the surface or suspended in the surface film by applying floatant to the wing.
Why We Fish It
Trout don't feed exclusively on adult mayflies floating on the surface. Emerging insects drifting beneath or caught in the surface film provide an abundant and vulnerable food source.
A sunken emerger gives you an important alternative when trout are feeding below the surface, ignoring conventional dry flies, or concentrating on insects in transition. Having several hatch colors available makes it easier to match the insects trout are actually eating.
When to Fish It
Fish the Sunken Emerger during mayfly activity when trout are feeding beneath the surface or taking insects as they emerge. It is also an excellent choice when you see rises but cannot determine whether trout are taking nymphs, emergers, or adult duns.
Choose the color pattern that corresponds to the mayfly hatch you are fishing.
How to Fish It
Fish the emerger below the surface on a natural drift, allowing it to travel through feeding lanes where trout are holding. You can also apply floatant to the wing to help suspend the fly in the surface film, creating a different presentation without changing patterns.
Experiment with depth and presentation until you find where the trout are feeding.
