Ralph Graves FISHING FLY , Ralph Graves Collector Fly, DRY FLY - 3 COFFIN FLIES
Description and Fly Background Below
This is a Vintage Collector Fly tied by known Catskill Fly Tyer Ralph Graves. I have a very large collection of Ralph's flies. He was a close personal friend and he was constantly giving me flies over a several decade period. My collection includes Dry Flies, Wet Flies, Streamer Flies , Salmon Flies and some of his original creations. The reality is that I have had these flies sitting in boxes for years. Recently I have been fishing some but many are just too nice to fish. They belong in frames or displayed in some other fashion. I have picked out the ones that I plan to keep and will be listing the remainder of my collection for sale. Included in the listing will be flies packaged on Ralph's business cards. Some have signatures, some don't. Those who met Ralph or saw him tie, in his shop, in my shop or at shows know that wet flies on cards were what most people had the opportunity to purchase. I will also be listing a large amount of Dry Flies which were never available in any quantity and Some Fishing Flies which were never packaged. All of the flies in my listings were given to me directly by Ralph. For a lot of years Ralph spent his afternoons in my fly shop. He would always tie a fly or two and he always left them for me. Many of these flies are from that period.
The Flies in these listing are Ralphie's fishing flies which were never packaged but sold or given to friends for their Fly Boxes rather than Shadow Boxes. Upon Ralph's passing I was given his personal fly boxes. Since then I have also acquired several other collections of Ralphie flies from local Roscoe NY residents who no longer fish.
I have included a few photos in the listing from some of the fly boxes that these are being pulled from. Every fly in the photos was Tied by Ralph over many decades.
ITEM DESCRIPTION- Ralph loved to tie Woolly Worms and he made them often. I have quite a few of them that I will be able to sell at this time. These are beautifully tied examples of this time proven traditional pattern!
THREE COFFIN FLIES- This Trio of flies need a bit of explanation. One night I was sitting in Ralph's shop with him and Poul Jorgensen. Poul handed us some material that he was messing around with. The wings on all 3 flies are made from the material.
He tied up the center fly in the photos, showing us his technique for putting both a spent wing and parachute wing on the same fly. Both Ralph and I tried to recreate his technique but neither of us ever made it look like his. (there are some closeup photos of Poul's Fly)
This fly sat on Ralphs desk for many years which is why it has yellowed a bit.
The other 2 flies, the extended feather body and foam body were tied by Ralph with Poul's wing fiber. At some point we were cleaning Ralphs desk and putting down a new blotter and he put the 3 flies in a cup and gave them to me.
A cool story and 3 really cool, old flies
These flies are all in very good condition. These flies may be fished or unfished. They have all been in fly boxes for several decades. Most of the listings are for flies that are in excellent condition..
