Muddler Minnow Fly, Muddler Minnow Selection
HISTORY
The iconic Muddler Minnow fly was created in 1936 by Don Gapen, an angler from Anoka, Minnesota, to imitate a bottom-dwelling Sculpin baitfish.
While operating a camp on the Nipigon River in Ontario, Canada, Gapen watched local First Nations guides catch sculpins for bait.
He brought a specimens back to camp and tied the first Muddler Minnow by lantern light using a gold tinsel body, gray squirrel tail hair, mottled turkey tail wing slips, and a sparse, clipped deer hair head.
The fly was specifically engineered to fool large, predatory Nipigon-strain brook trout.
This proven fly pattern has multiple uses. Despite being a great subsurface patter that imitatres sculpins and other baitfish, they are great surface flies that will wake on the surface. Perfect both day and night. An option in the dark for fish that have seen all the mouse patterns. I also like to fish it on a dropper in front of a heavy streamer. This technique of offering a heavy fast sinking fly in combination with a buoyant fly is deadly!
