March Brown Emerger Fly – Ken’s Sunken March Brown Emerger
A detailed sunken March Brown mayfly emerger designed for trout feeding on insects transitioning from the nymphal stage toward the surface.
Description
Ken’s Sunken March Brown Emerger is part of the Baxter House Sunken Emerger collection. This highly detailed pattern imitates a vulnerable stage of mayfly emergence, when the insect is transitioning toward adulthood but remains exposed in the water.
In the Catskills and Upper Delaware region, the Eastern March Brown is commonly identified as Maccaffertium vicarium, historically known as Stenonema vicarium. During a March Brown hatch, trout often feed heavily on emerging insects below the surface rather than waiting for fully emerged duns.
This pattern gives you a realistic option for targeting trout feeding on that vulnerable stage of the hatch.
The Baxter House Sunken Emerger collection is available in six popular mayfly patterns: March Brown, Hendrickson, Green Drake, Isonychia, Sulfur, and Blue Wing Olive (BWO).
Why We Fish It
An emerging mayfly is an easy feeding opportunity for trout. It is still in transition and has not yet reached the safety of flight. A sunken emerger imitates this vulnerable stage and gives trout a different presentation from a standard nymph or adult dry fly.
When trout are feeding below the surface during a hatch, this can be an effective pattern to have in your fly box.
When to Fish It
Fish Ken’s Sunken March Brown Emerger during the March Brown hatch, especially when trout are feeding beneath the surface or refusing conventional dry flies. It is also useful when you see feeding activity but cannot determine exactly which stage of the hatch the trout are taking.
How to Fish It
Fish the emerger below the surface on a natural drift through likely trout feeding lanes. You can also apply floatant to the wing to help suspend the fly in the surface film, allowing you to target trout feeding just beneath or at the surface.
Experiment with both presentations to find where the fish are feeding.
