Hendrickson Comparadun
A low-profile mayfly dry fly designed for selective trout feeding on Hendrickson duns.
Description
The Hendrickson Comparadun imitates the adult Hendrickson mayfly, Ephemerella subvaria, whose male is commonly known as the Red Quill. Its low-profile design and fan-shaped hair wing create a natural-looking silhouette on the surface.
Comparaduns are particularly useful when trout are feeding in slower or flatter water and are inspecting individual insects closely. This pattern offers a simple, effective presentation during one of the Upper Delaware River's important spring hatches.
Why We Fish It
The low-riding profile can be a good choice when trout refuse more heavily dressed dry flies. It presents a natural-looking adult without creating an unnecessarily bulky silhouette. The low ride gives signals vulnerability which triggers the feeding response in trout.
When to Fish It
Use it during the spring Hendrickson hatch when trout are taking adult duns, especially in slower currents and flatter pools.
How to Fish It
Fish it with a careful dead drift. Pay attention to leader and tippet placement so the fly reaches the feeding lane without drag.
Baxter House Guide Tip
When trout are rising in smooth water, try a Comparadun before changing several other patterns. Its low profile can make a difference when fish are inspecting the fly closely. This fly is also included in our Hendrickson Life Cycle Selection
