Hendrickson Parachute Dry Fly
A parachute-style adult mayfly imitation for trout feeding on Hendricksons and Red Quills.
Description
The Hendrickson Parachute is designed to imitate the adult Hendrickson mayfly, Ephemerella subvaria. The male of this same species is commonly called the Red Quill. These spring mayflies are important food sources for trout on the Upper Delaware River and many other Eastern streams.
The parachute profile provides a visible wing and a low-riding body that helps the fly sit naturally on the surface. It is a useful option when trout are feeding on emerging or fully emerged Hendricksons.
Why We Fish It
Hendrickson hatches can bring larger, selective trout to the surface. A parachute fly gives the angler a practical adult imitation that is easier to track in broken water while maintaining a natural presentation.
When to Fish It
Fish during the spring Hendrickson hatch when adult mayflies are emerging and trout are taking duns from the surface.
How to Fish It
Present the fly on a dead drift through feeding lanes and along current seams. Avoid drag, especially when fishing slower water where trout have more time to inspect the fly.
Baxter House Guide Tip
Carry both light Hendrickson and darker Red Quill imitations. They represent the female and male forms of Ephemerella subvaria, and matching the natural's color can help when trout become selective. Additionally all Ephemerella species hatch in mass. There are lots of still born and cripples on the water in every hatch. You should always have some of our CDC Knock Down Duns, Hackle Wing Cripples and Hackle Spinners in your box. All can be found in our Hendrickson Life Cycle Selections
