Gotcha Fly – Classic Bonefish & Saltwater Flats Fly

One of the most recognized and dependable bonefish patterns in saltwater fly fishing. The Gotcha is a standard in flats anglers' fly boxes and has proven itself on bonefish flats around the world.

Description

The Gotcha Fly is a classic saltwater pattern that has earned its reputation through decades of success on bonefish flats worldwide. Its simple, effective design imitates the small shrimp and crustaceans that bonefish regularly feed on in shallow water.

When bonefish are cruising sandy flats and feeding along the bottom, the Gotcha is an excellent choice. Its compact profile and natural presentation make it effective in a wide range of conditions, from clear, shallow water to deeper flats where fish are actively feeding.

Although best known as a bonefish fly, the Gotcha is also a useful pattern for permit and other saltwater species that feed on small crustaceans.

Available in three proven colors and two versatile sizes, this pattern gives you options for changing light, water clarity and bottom conditions.

Why Fish the Gotcha?

  • Worldwide reputation: A proven bonefish pattern used by flats anglers around the globe.

  • Natural forage imitation: Suggests small shrimp and crustaceans.

  • Versatile presentation: Effective for fish feeding along sandy and mixed-bottom flats.

  • Three color choices: Pink, Tan and Olive cover a variety of conditions.

  • Two useful sizes: #2 and #6 provide flexibility for different fishing situations.

How to Fish It

Present the Gotcha ahead of cruising bonefish and allow it to settle toward the bottom. Use short, controlled strips to imitate a shrimp moving across the flats. Adjust your retrieve to the fish's behavior and water conditions. When fish are spooky or heavily pressured, a subtle presentation and longer pauses can be especially effective.

Capt. Ken's Guide Tip

The Gotcha is a pattern I want available whenever I'm fishing bonefish flats. Don't get caught up in making the retrieve too complicated. Lead the fish, let the fly settle and use short strips to get its attention. If the fish is moving slowly or appears wary, slow everything down.
