Blue Wing Olive Para Emerger – Capt. Ken’s Transitional Emerger Fly

The Blue Wing Olive Para Emerger combines the best features of a parachute dry fly, Klinkhammer, and transitional emerger into one versatile trout pattern. Designed by Capt. Ken, this fly presents a vulnerable emerging mayfly profile that can fool selective trout throughout a Blue Wing Olive hatch.

Description

The Blue Wing Olive Para Emerger sits partially above and partially below the water's surface, imitating a mayfly transitioning from its nymphal stage into an adult dun. This suspended profile creates the appearance of an insect struggling to escape its nymphal shuck—an easy target for feeding trout.

When a river is covered with emerging or struggling Blue Wing Olive duns, trout can become particularly selective. The Para Emerger offers a different presentation from a conventional dry fly, making it an excellent choice when fish are refusing standard adult patterns.

Why We Fish It

  • Combines parachute, Klinkhammer, and emerger design features

  • Suspended profile imitates a mayfly transitioning through the surface film

  • Presents a vulnerable target to selective, rising trout

  • Effective throughout the different stages of a Blue Wing Olive hatch

When to Fish It

Fish this pattern during Blue Wing Olive activity, especially when trout are feeding on emerging insects or struggling duns in and around the surface film.

Blue Wing Olives belong to several mayfly species, most commonly associated with the genus Baetis. Depending on the stream and season, other small mayfly species may also contribute to a BWO hatch.

How to Fish It

Present the fly on a natural, drag-free drift through rising fish. Concentrate on the surface film and the water just beneath it, where trout often feed on emerging mayflies.
