Kwan Fly Selection – 8 Redfish & Bonefish Kwan Flies, Size #2
An 8-fly selection of Capt. Ken’s Kwan Fly in four proven saltwater color combinations. Originally designed for bonefish, this versatile flats pattern is also highly effective for redfish, snook and other inshore predators.
Description
The Kwan is one of the most versatile patterns you can carry on the saltwater flats. Designed to imitate the small baitfish and crustaceans found in shallow saltwater environments, it combines two different presentations in one effective fly.
Capt. Ken’s Kwan has a unique action. Retrieved with quick strips, it flutters through the water like a fleeing shrimp or small baitfish. When the retrieve is paused, the fly dives toward the bottom like a crab or other crustacean settling into the sand.
Originally developed for bonefish, the Kwan has also proven itself on redfish, snook and other species that roam the flats. It is an excellent choice when fish are feeding on small forage close to the bottom.
Why Fish the Kwan?
-
Dual-purpose imitation: Suggests both small baitfish and crustaceans.
-
Unique movement: Flutters during a quick retrieve and dives toward the bottom when paused.
-
Multi-species appeal: Originally designed for bonefish, with proven applications for redfish and snook.
-
Four color combinations: Gives you options for changing light, water clarity and bottom conditions.
How to Fish It
Present the Kwan ahead of cruising fish and allow it to settle toward the bottom. Use short, quick strips to make the fly flutter and dart like fleeing forage. Follow those strips with a pause, allowing the fly to dive and settle like a crab.
Experiment with the length and speed of your strips. Often, the pause is when a following fish commits to eating the fly.
Capt. Ken’s Guide Tip
Don't overlook the importance of the pause when fishing the Kwan. Its ability to flutter when stripped and settle toward the bottom when stopped is what makes this pattern so effective. Mix quick strips with deliberate pauses to imitate a fleeing crustacean that is trying to escape but eventually settles back to the bottom.
