Ghost Shrimp Fly Selection – 12 Saltwater Shrimp Flies, Size #6

A must-have small shrimp imitation for bonefish, permit and redfish. Especially effective on spooky, pressured fish that demand a subtle, natural presentation.

Description

The Ghost Shrimp is an excellent small saltwater fly when fish are wary and refusing larger or more aggressive presentations. Its compact profile makes it a great choice for clear, shallow water and heavily pressured flats where a subtle approach can make all the difference.

This is one of my favorite patterns for bonefish on the flats and also a go-to fly for the extremely spooky winter redfish in Tampa Bay. When these fish are cruising shallow water and become difficult to approach, downsizing to a small, natural-looking shrimp imitation can be a major advantage.

Don't overlook this fly for permit either. Ghost shrimp are an important forage item, and this pattern gives you another option when targeting selective fish.

Why Fish the Ghost Shrimp?

  • Small and subtle: Ideal for spooky and pressured saltwater fish.

  • Bonefish favorite: A great choice for shallow flats and wary bonefish.

  • Tampa Bay redfish: One of Capt. Ken's favorite patterns for spooky winter redfish.

  • Permit option: A compact shrimp imitation for selective fish.

  • Four useful colors: Pink, Olive, White and Tan provide options for different water and bottom conditions.

How to Fish It

Present the Ghost Shrimp ahead of cruising fish and allow it to settle naturally. Use short, subtle strips to imitate a shrimp moving along the bottom. Avoid overly aggressive retrieves when targeting wary fish in shallow, clear water.

When fishing winter redfish in Tampa Bay, pay particular attention to shallow areas where fish are tailing or slowly cruising. A small fly and a careful presentation can be critical.

Capt. Ken's Guide Tip

When bonefish or redfish become spooky, one of the first adjustments I make is to downsize the fly. These fish see plenty of presentations, especially in clear, shallow water. The Ghost Shrimp is a pattern I always want available when a larger fly is getting refused. It is particularly valuable during Tampa Bay's winter redfish season.
